Get a head start on your spring cleaning with these seven organizational tips:
DIY Drop Off Point
The entryway tends to be the place where everyone unloads. From keys and purses to school bags and coats, things can quickly get out of control. Give these items a convenient resting place by installing a built-in shelving unit for small items and a bench with organizational baskets for larger items. For an even simpler approach, mount hooks and knobs to the side of the wall then label them per person or item.
Create A Command Center
Busy families need a place to keep track of all their to-dos, including schedules, permission notes, grocery lists and mail. Find a convenient place in your home to dub the household hub. Gather up all loose papers and sort which ones can be posted or thrown out. Use a bulletin board to post notes, photos or reminders on.
Make a Wardrobe Transition For Your Kids
Prepare for spring by purging your childrens closets of unworn clothes and accessories. If they no longer fit it, take that as a sign and donate it. Begin packing up winter clothing and taking it and other seasonal items to your SmartStop self-storage unit for safe keeping until next year — your closet will thank you, and your mornings will be much easier if you aren't stuck weeding through old clothes.
Restore Order
Don't let your itsy-bitsy storage get the best of you. Go through closets and make room for what is being worn, and donate those items that never get touched. Add additional organizers in the closets to make use of what the kids use most. Install shelving racks from Home Depot, and make organizers for their toys near the floor. Shelves or racks can be added to the top of closets to organize the mommy section. Lets face it, the top parts of our closets never get used. Organize the space better, and the kids stuff can remain in their rooms.
Think Shoe Storage
If your entryway is lined with shoes of every shape and size, make it a display. Place a colorful tub next to a single chair so family and friends will have a place to sit as they take off their shoes. A row of ottomans provides extra seating while hiding shoes, coats and scarves underneath. If it's the rainy season, place a tin filled with pebbles by the door. That way ice-covered boots can defrost without leaving a puddle behind.
Laundry — Stop Sorting
What makes doing the laundry so time consuming is having to sort, fold and deliver all of the clean clothes. Instead, use Stacey Plaisance's Lazy Mom Tip and hang a mesh bag on the inside door of every child's bedroom closet. Every night they can place dirty socks and underwear in the bag. All you'll have to do is wash and dry the bag, then deliver it back for them to put away. Yay! No more sorting.
